A device or mathematical process that selectively removes or attenuates certain components from a signal or data set while allowing others to pass through. In meteorology, filters are used to separate different scales of motion, remove noise from observations, or smooth data. Examples include low-pass filters for removing high-frequency fluctuations and high-pass filters for isolating short-period variations.
