  1. A processing operation applied to seismic data to selectively enhance or suppress certain frequencies, wavenumbers, or other characteristics of the seismic signal. Filters are used to remove noise, improve signal-to-noise ratio, and enhance specific geological features. Common types include bandpass filters, notch filters, and f-k filters.

  2. Mathematical operations or algorithms applied to data to remove unwanted noise, enhance specific features, or smooth variations. In reservoir characterization, filters are used on seismic data to improve signal-to-noise ratio or on well logs to reduce high-frequency fluctuations. Common types include low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filters.
