Bandpass filter

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000267

  1. An electronic or computational filter that allows signals within a specific range of frequencies or wavelengths to pass through while attenuating signals outside that range. In atmospheric science, bandpass filters are applied to meteorological data to isolate phenomena occurring at particular temporal or spatial scales. For instance, a bandpass filter can extract oscillations with periods between 30 and 60 days.

  2. A filter whose frequencies are between given upper and lower cutoff values, while substantially attenuating all frequencies outside these values (this band).
