Initialization
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006554
The process of adjusting raw data for a numerical weather prediction model to create a dynamically consistent state between variables like wind, pressure, and temperature. This adjustment removes unrealistic high-frequency oscillations, known as gravitational waves, that would otherwise contaminate the forecast. Methods include normal mode initialization, which filters out fast-moving waves, and digital filter initialization, which applies a low-pass filter to the model's time-tendency fields.
