Normal mode initialization
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007595
A numerical procedure used to adjust the initial state of a numerical weather prediction model to remove high-frequency, non-meteorological oscillations. The technique filters out spurious gravity waves by projecting the initial data onto the model's normal modes (its natural modes of oscillation) and modifying the gravity wave components to be consistent with the slower, rotating flow. This process creates a balanced initial state that prevents unrealistic pressure fluctuations at the start of a forecast.
