Normal modes
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007596
The fundamental oscillatory patterns or characteristic solutions of a linearized atmospheric or oceanic model. Each mode has a specific frequency and spatial structure, representing distinct types of waves such as Rossby waves, Kelvin waves, or gravity waves. These modes are used in diagnostic studies and in initialization schemes for numerical models.
