Initial-value problem
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006555
A mathematical problem where the solution of a differential equation is sought given the state of the system at a particular initial time. In atmospheric science, this involves predicting the future state of the atmosphere based on its current observed conditions. Numerical weather prediction models are formulated as initial-value problems, requiring accurate observations to start their forecasts.
