Characteristic-value problem
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004260
A mathematical formulation involving a linear operator or matrix where the goal is to find specific vectors, known as eigenvectors, that are only scaled by a constant factor, called the eigenvalue, when the operator is applied. This type of problem is encountered in atmospheric dynamics for analyzing wave propagation and stability. Solutions provide insights into the natural modes of oscillation within the atmosphere or oceans.
