Eigenvalue

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005293

A scalar associated with a linear transformation that, when applied to a non-zero vector (an eigenvector), results in a scaled version of the same vector. In atmospheric science, eigenvalues are used in principal component analysis to identify dominant modes of variability in meteorological datasets. They quantify the magnitude of variance explained by each corresponding eigenvector.
