Snow drought

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008979

A period of significantly below-average snowpack accumulation, often characterized by reduced snow depth and snow water equivalent. This condition can result from warmer temperatures leading to more precipitation falling as rain instead of snow, or from insufficient precipitation during the winter months. Snow droughts have severe implications for water resources, agriculture, and hydropower generation in regions reliant on snowmelt.
