Sonora weather

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010770

A local name in coastal Southern California for summer spells of hot, humid, muggy weather, produced when moist tropical air from northwestern Mexico and the Gulf of California moves north on the monsoon circulation and reaches the Pacific coastal plain. Dewpoints run high, and showers or thunderstorms, otherwise unusual on that coast in summer, sometimes develop. It contrasts with Santa Ana conditions, which are hot but very dry.
