Spicule

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009138

A dynamic, narrow jet of plasma that shoots upward from the Sun's chromosphere into the lower corona. These features are relatively short-lived, lasting only for about 5 to 15 minutes, and appear as a forest of bright, grass-like structures when viewed at the solar limb. Spicules are thought to play a part in transferring mass and energy from the lower solar atmosphere into the much hotter corona.
