Starting plume

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009207

The initial, transient phase of a buoyant plume's development, characterized by a distinct head or vortex ring that rises and expands as it entrains ambient fluid. This phase occurs when a source of buoyancy, such as a hot gas release, is first initiated. The starting plume eventually transitions into a more continuous, steady-state plume.
