Tercile

One of two points that divide a probability distribution or a set of ordered data into three equal parts, each containing one-third of the observations. In climate forecasting, terciles are often used to categorize future conditions as being in the lower, middle, or upper third of historical observations. For example, precipitation forecasts might be given as below-normal, near-normal, or above-normal.
