Thermally indirect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009600
Describing an atmospheric circulation where cold air rises and warm air sinks, requiring an external input of kinetic energy to maintain the flow. This process works against buoyancy forces and tends to increase horizontal temperature differences. The Ferrel cell in the mid-latitudes is an example of a thermally indirect circulation.
