Track of a depression

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009733

The path that the center of a low-pressure system, or depression, follows over the Earth's surface as it develops, matures, and dissipates. This path is governed by the steering flow of the large-scale winds in the middle and upper troposphere, primarily the jet stream in the mid-latitudes. Forecast tracks are depicted on weather maps as a line connecting the past, present, and predicted future positions of the low-pressure center at specific time intervals.
