Unsharp masking

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009897

An image processing technique applied to meteorological satellite or radar data to accentuate fine details and edges. The process involves creating a blurred version of the original image and subtracting a fraction of it from the original, which enhances high-frequency components like cloud boundaries or small convective cells. This method makes subtle features more visible for analysis by forecasters, aiding in the identification of developing weather phenomena.
