Method of images

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010621

A mathematical technique for solving differential equations in a domain with a simple boundary by replacing the boundary with fictitious sources outside the domain. The configuration of these 'image' sources is chosen so that the boundary conditions are satisfied automatically, simplifying the problem. In electrostatics, this involves placing an image charge behind a conducting plane to calculate the electric field, which is equivalent to the field from the original and image charges.
