Contrast

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010446

The difference in radiative properties, such as brightness or temperature, between a meteorological feature and its background as depicted in satellite or radar imagery. High contrast allows for easier identification and analysis of atmospheric phenomena, like bright, cold cloud tops against a warm sea surface in infrared images. Image enhancement techniques are often applied to increase the contrast and highlight specific features of interest, such as thunderstorm updrafts.
