Upper front

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009907

A frontal boundary between two air masses that is present in the middle and upper troposphere but does not extend down to the Earth's surface. These fronts form when a surface front, such as a cold front, has its surface connection cut off by a stable layer of cold air near the ground. An upper cold front can produce clouds and precipitation, such as showers and thunderstorms, that appear to develop without a surface-based trigger.
