Wetted area

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010222

The portion of a surface, such as soil, vegetation, or a meteorological instrument, that is covered by liquid water. In surface energy balance studies, the wetted area fraction determines the partitioning of available energy between sensible heat flux and latent heat flux from evaporation. A larger wetted area following a precipitation event leads to increased evaporation and atmospheric moisture.
