Doodlebugger

A colloquial name for a person who works as a field technician or geophysicist on a seismic acquisition crew. These individuals are involved in the hands-on work of collecting seismic data, which includes laying out geophones and cables, operating recording equipment, and managing seismic sources. The term originated in the early days of oil exploration when rudimentary geophysical methods were likened to dowsing with a divining rod, sometimes called a doodlebug.
