azacitidine

Term · Oncology and biomedicine · MLC-T-ONC-000876

  1. A drug used under the brand names Onureg to treat adults with certain types of acute myeloid leukemia and Vidaza to treat adults with certain types of myelodysplastic syndromes and children aged 1 month and older with newly diagnosed juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Azacitidine stops cells from making DNA and may kill cancer cells. It is a type of antimetabolite.

  2. A pyrimidine nucleoside analogue of cytidine with antineoplastic activity. Azacitidine is incorporated into DNA, where it reversibly inhibits DNA methyltransferase, thereby blocking DNA methylation. Hypomethylation of DNA by azacitidine may activate tumor suppressor genes silenced by hypermethylation, resulting in an antitumor effect. This agent is also incorporated into RNA, thereby disrupting normal RNA function and impairing tRNA cytosine-5-methyltransferase activity.
