Relating to the immediate, surrounding environmental conditions, such as the air, water, or soil in a particular location. In ecotoxicology, it describes the background characteristics of a medium before the introduction of a specific pollutant or stressor from a point source. Ambient concentrations of substances are measured to establish a baseline for assessing environmental contamination and exposure levels for organisms.
