Demographic stochasticity
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002982
The random fluctuations in population size and structure that arise from chance events in the survival and reproduction of individuals. These chance events are particularly impactful in small populations, where a few random deaths or births can drastically alter population dynamics. It is a key factor in the extinction risk of small populations.
