An article, such as an instrument, apparatus, machine, implant or in vitro reagent, together with its parts and accessories, that is intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat or prevent disease. What sets it apart from a drug is that it does not reach its main intended effect through chemical action in or on the body and does not depend on being metabolized. In the United States the FDA regulates devices in classes I to III according to risk.
