First-in-class

Describing a drug that uses a new and unique mechanism of action to treat a medical condition. Such a therapeutic agent is the first one to be approved by a regulatory authority, like the FDA, that targets a specific biological pathway or molecule previously unexploited for that indication. Subsequent drugs with the same mechanism of action are not considered first-in-class.
