Drug repurposing
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003449
The process of identifying new therapeutic uses for existing drugs that have already been approved for other indications. This strategy involves investigating known compounds for activity against different diseases, potentially accelerating drug development by bypassing early-stage safety and toxicity testing. A notable example is sildenafil, originally developed for angina, now used for erectile dysfunction.
