Follow-on drug

A drug that acts through the same or a similar mechanism as an existing, previously approved drug, often developed by a different company and sometimes called a me-too drug. Its chemical structure can differ from the original, and it aims to offer better efficacy, fewer side effects or a different route or schedule of administration. It is distinct from a generic drug, which is a copy of an off-patent medicine with the same active ingredient.
