Fontanelle

A soft, membranous gap between the cranial bones of a fetus or infant, where ossification is not yet complete. These areas allow for the compression of the skull during birth and accommodate rapid brain growth during early development. The anterior fontanelle typically closes between 12 and 18 months of age.
