Anencephalus

A severe congenital birth defect characterized by the incomplete development of the brain and bones of the skull during embryogenesis. The fetus or infant lacks the forebrain and cerebrum, the largest parts of the brain responsible for cognition and consciousness. This condition results from a failure of the anterior neural tube to close during the third or fourth week of pregnancy.
