Food additive

A substance that is not eaten as a food in its own right and is not a typical food ingredient, but is deliberately put into a food for a technological reason at some stage from manufacture through processing, packaging, transport and storage. Preservatives, colorants and emulsifiers are examples. In the European Union each authorised additive is given an E number, for example E330 for citric acid.
