Fast follower

A drug candidate picked to follow closely behind a lead compound, ready to take its place if the lead fails or to improve on its properties. The name comes from business, where a fast follower is a company or product that enters a market soon after a pioneering innovator has proven the demand. In drug discovery the follower typically targets the same mechanism as the lead.
