Nominal mass

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007991

The integer mass of an ion or molecule, calculated by summing the integer masses of its most abundant isotopes. For example, the nominal mass of water (H2O) is 18 (1+1+16). This value is used for general identification in mass spectrometry and differs from the exact mass, which considers the precise isotopic masses.
