Risk marker

A measurable characteristic or factor that indicates an increased probability of developing a disease or adverse health condition. This marker does not necessarily imply a causal relationship but serves as an indicator of susceptibility or exposure. Examples include elevated blood pressure for cardiovascular disease or specific genetic predispositions.
