Sustainability
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011704
The principle of satisfying present needs in a way that leaves later generations able to satisfy theirs. In chemistry it is pursued by designing processes and products that reduce environmental impact, conserve resources and respect social equity, using measures such as renewable feedstocks, biodegradable products and circular use of materials. The classic formulation dates from the 1987 Brundtland report, Our Common Future.
