The application of a graphics processing unit (GPU) to perform computations for purposes other than graphics rendering. General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units takes advantage of the parallel processing architecture of a GPU to accelerate calculations that were historically performed by a central processing unit (CPU). This technique is applied in fields such as scientific simulation, machine learning, and financial modeling.
