A generic pin on an integrated circuit or circuit board whose function as an input or output is controlled by software at run time. These General-Purpose Input/Output pins have no predefined function, allowing them to interface with a variety of external components like sensors, motors, and LEDs. Single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi feature a 40-pin GPIO header for connecting to and controlling custom hardware projects.
