The successor to the original Internet Protocol, IPv4, designed to solve the problem of address exhaustion. Internet Protocol version 6 expands the address space from 32 bits to 128 bits, providing a vastly larger number of unique identifiers for devices connected to the internet. An IPv6 address is written as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits, with the groups separated by colons.
