Multicast

Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-000782

A method of sending network packets to a specific group of recipients simultaneously, rather than to a single recipient (unicast) or all recipients (broadcast). This technique conserves bandwidth by sending a single stream of data that is then replicated by network routers to reach all members of the designated group. Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is commonly used to manage multicast group memberships.
