Parity bit
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001519
An extra bit added to a binary data stream to detect errors during data transmission or storage. It is set to either 0 or 1 to make the total number of 1s in the data an even or odd count, depending on the parity scheme. Simple parity checking can detect an odd number of bit errors but cannot correct them.
