Swap file

A portion of a hard disk drive or solid-state drive used by an operating system to temporarily store data that would normally be held in random-access memory (RAM). This mechanism, also known as virtual memory, allows a system to run applications that require more RAM than physically available. The size of a swap file is often configured based on the amount of physical RAM.
