Page fault

An event that occurs when a program attempts to access a memory page that is not currently loaded into the main memory (RAM) but is present in virtual memory. The operating system then retrieves the required page from secondary storage, such as a hard drive, and loads it into RAM. Frequent page faults can degrade system performance.
