Virtual memory
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-001319
A memory management technique that allows a computer to compensate for shortages of physical memory by temporarily transferring data from random access memory (RAM) to disk storage. The operating system creates an illusion of a larger, contiguous memory space than is physically available. This process involves swapping pages of data between RAM and a dedicated area on the hard drive, known as the swap file or paging file.
