Virtual machine

A software-based emulation of a physical computer that runs its own operating system and applications as if it were a separate, physical machine. A hypervisor, or virtual machine monitor, creates and manages one or more VMs on a single hardware host, allocating resources like CPU, memory, and storage to each. Type 1 hypervisors run directly on the host's hardware, while Type 2 hypervisors run as an application within a conventional host operating system.
