  "definition": "A non-animal test method developed in search for a replacement for the Draize rabbit eye test. This assay evaluates the potential eye toxicity of a chemical by measuring the dose required to reduce the metabolic rate in treated cells in vitro. A very sensitive instrument called a microphysiometer is used to electronically measure the metabolic rate of cell populations through small changes in acidic metabolites in the medium. The rate is constant in an undamaged cell population. If the cells are injured, an altered metabolic rate is found. The CM assay would be used in combination with other non-animal alternative tests (see Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability Assay).",
