Genetically Modified Organism

1. Organisms whose genome has been changed by a genetic engineering technique.
2. An organism in which humans by means of gene or cell technologies have altered the genetic material. These include the isolation, characterization, and modifi cation of genes and their introduction into living cells or 20 NOAA FISHERIES GLOSSARY viruses of DNA, as well as techniques for the production of living cells with new combinations of genetic material by the fusion of two or more cells.
A term that refers to plants that have had genes implanted to improve their performance by making them resistant to certain pesticides, diseases, or insects.
