Internal dose
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-014758
1. In exposure assessment, the amount of a substance penetrating the absorption barriers (e.g. skin, lung tissue, gastrointestinal tract) of an organism through either physical or biological processes.
2. The amount of an agent that enters a target by crossing an exposure surface that acts as an absorption barrier. Synonymous with absorbed dose. See also Absorption barrier and Dose.
3. The amount of contaminant that gets past the exchange boundary (e.g., GI tract, lung) and into the blood, or the amount of the contaminant that can interact with organs and tissues to cause biological effects.
