Porosity

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-021629

1. The volume fraction of a rock or unconsolidated sediment not occupied by solid material but usually occupied by liquids, vapor, and/or air.

2. Ratio of the total volume of voids to the total volume of a porous medium. The percentage of the bulk volume of a rock or soil that is occupied by interstices, whether isolated or connected. Porosity may be primary (formed during deposition or cementation of the material) or secondary (formed after deposition or cementation) such as fractures.

3. The capacity of soil of rock to hold water.

4. The ability of rock material to store water.

5. Degree to which soil, gravel, sediment, or rock is permeated with pores or cavities through which water or air can move.

6. The ratio of the void volume of a porous rock to the total volume, usually expressed as a percentage.

7. Percentage of the rock volume that can be occupied by oil, gas or water.

8. The void volume (i.e. “empty” spaces) of soils and rock.

9. The degree to which soil, gravel, sediment, or rock is permeated with pores or cavities through which water or air can move.
