1. A general term for a body of flowing water; natural water course containing water at least part of the year. In hydrology, it is generally applied to the water flowing in a natural channel as distinct from a canal.

2. Linear body of water flowing on the Earth's surface.

3. Free-flowing, predominantly fresh surface water in a defined channel, and includes rivers, creeks, branches, canals, freshwater sloughs, and other similar water bodies.

4. In comparison to a river, a smaller flow of water in a channel or bed, also referred to as a brook, rivulet, or small river.
